BETTING BASICS / PRICE COMPARISON
What is line shopping?
By PropGoat · Updated October 26, 2026Line shopping means comparing the odds offered by different sportsbooks for the same bet before choosing where to place it. It is one of the simplest reasons to use a comparison board.
The same bet can pay differently.
Sportsbooks do not always offer the same price. If two books list the same player to go over 4.5 rebounds, one might offer −110 and another +100. The selection is the same; the potential payout is different.
At −110, a $110 stake wins $100 in profit if the bet wins.
At +100, the same $110 stake wins $110 in profit.
That is $10 more profit on a winning bet. Either price can still lose the full $110 stake.
A better price improves the payout for that selection. It does not make the selection more likely to win, and it does not automatically make the bet positive expected value.
Compare the exact same market.
Before choosing a price, check the player or team, matchup, date, market, side and line. Over 4.5 rebounds and over 5.5 rebounds are different bets. A full-game total and a first-half total are different markets.
Also check settlement rules, including overtime, player participation and void rules. Identical-looking selections can have different rules across books. A displayed price is only useful if you can actually place that bet under the conditions you expect.
What PropGoat helps you compare
Odds Edge groups available quotes for a selection so you can compare books in one place. Your target-book and odds filters determine which offers are eligible for the best-price and EV calculation. Comparison columns can show additional prices for context.
The board ranks eligible offers using known fee adjustments. It still displays the advertised sportsbook odds, so the visible odds and the estimated net value serve different purposes. Unknown fees or missing data can limit which offers qualify for an EV estimate.
Check freshness before you act.
PropGoat uses collected snapshots, rather than guaranteeing an instantly executable price. Check the board’s collection time and data age, then verify the current odds and line at the sportsbook. Offers can move or become unavailable between updates.
You also need access to the sportsbook in your location. The presence of a quote does not mean the book accepts your account, location or desired stake.
A better price is a starting point.
Price comparison is useful even without an EV estimate. To understand how the board compares an offer against a reference book, read our guide to expected value. Neither comparison replaces your judgment or guarantees a profitable result.
